In a strategic move prompted by the injury setback to midfielder Víctor Rodríguez, FC Goa has finalized the loan signing of Spanish midfielder Borja Herrera from East Bengal. Rodríguez sustained a right leg injury during an ISL match against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in late December, prompting the club to swiftly seek a capable replacement.

After thorough consideration of various options, FC Goa decided on Herrera, who previously played under their current head coach, Manolo Márquez, during the ISL 2022-23 season while at Hyderabad FC.

East Bengal, the reigning Super Cup champions, has agreed to the short-term loan move for the 30-year-old Spanish midfielder. Known for his versatility as a central midfielder and his effectiveness in an attacking role, Herrera has been a pivotal player for both Hyderabad FC and East Bengal.

Recognized for his precision in long-range shots and a powerful left foot, Herrera’s ability to make late runs into the box and provide a goal-scoring threat enhances his value as an attacking asset, especially coming off the bench.

In his debut ISL season with Hyderabad FC, Herrera showcased his capabilities by providing five assists and scoring four goals in 22 appearances. However, his form experienced a slight dip at East Bengal, where he managed two goals in 12 matches across the ISL and Kalinga Super Cup.

Currently pursuing the ISL Shield title, FC Goa holds the second spot in the league table with 24 points from 10 matches, trailing Kerala Blasters by two points with two games in hand. The addition of Herrera is expected to fortify FC Goa’s midfield as they strive to clinch the title.

FC Goa’s next challenge awaits them on February 1, 2024, against Hyderabad FC, marking the resumption of ISL after the Kalinga Super Cup and India’s participation in the AFC Asian Cup 2023. Herrera is anticipated to be available for selection in this match against his former team, injecting an intriguing dynamic into the upcoming fixture.
