Odisha FC is gearing up for an action-packed season as they prepare for their fifth Indian Super League (ISL) campaign and their debut appearance at the AFC Cup. The team, now guided by their new head coach, Sergio Lobera, is determined to elevate their performance after finishing in sixth place in the previous ISL season. Lobera predicts that this season will be the most fiercely competitive in recent memory.

Cultivating a Sporting Spirit in Odisha

Odisha FC is on a mission to foster a vibrant sporting culture within the state, not just for athletes but also for their passionate supporters. The club’s presence has ignited the aspirations of athletes and stirred the hearts of dedicated fans.

Nurturing Grassroots and Youth Development

With a strategic approach to grassroots and youth development, Odisha FC is set to organize a series of engaging events in educational institutions. These initiatives aim to cultivate a love for sports among the youth while imparting valuable knowledge. Moreover, the club plans to host monthly activities that are open to participants of all age groups, emphasizing the significance of sports, fitness, and education.

Ravi Khedar, the Head of Business, stated, “We intend to host a series of engaging events in educational institutions to raise awareness and educate students about the importance of sports.”

Integration of Local Talent

Developing a local team in an area where football culture has dwindled poses a significant challenge. Nonetheless, the management at Odisha FC is unwavering in their commitment to this endeavor. They are actively identifying and nurturing exceptionally talented players from the region. Age-specific teams have been formed for players aged 13, 15, 17, and 19, with the aim of promoting the most promising individuals to the senior team.

The club’s dedication extends beyond player training. They are passionately involved in organizing various programs to educate and empower coaches who will mentor the youth. Santosh Kashyap, the Head of Youth Development, stressed the importance of these initiatives, noting, “These specialized programs cater to both the youth within specific age groups and the coaching staff, contributing to the development of a skilled and competitive football landscape in the future.”

AFC Cup Kickoff

Odisha FC is set to begin their season with home fixtures as they embark on their AFC Cup 2023-24 campaign, commencing against Mohun Bagan Super Giant on September 19.

Coach Sergio Lobera exudes confidence ahead of the team’s clash with the formidable Mohun Bagan side, saying, “I thrive on challenges. However, I want the players to relish the game, and the team that manages pressure best will emerge victorious.”

When asked about the team’s performance in the upcoming ISL season, Lobera added, “We are thrilled about the exciting season ahead of us. We recognize the challenges it presents, but we embrace them with enthusiasm. Hopefully, we can deliver success and memorable football moments for our fans. As for standout players, I’ve always believed that teams are greater than individuals, and this year, there are many strong teams. I’m confident it will be the toughest and most competitive ISL season in recent memory.
