In a recent development, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has found itself in a challenging situation as the 2023 Asian Games in China coincide with the kick-off of the Indian Super League (ISL). This scheduling clash has led to a predicament for the national team, with ISL clubs unwilling to release their players for national duty.
AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey has taken the initiative to address this issue. He has appealed to the Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and all ISL clubs to consider delaying the start of the league by ten days, thereby allowing the Indian national team to field a full-strength squad at the Asian Games. Chaubey emphasized the importance of prioritizing national interest and representing the country on the global stage.
Chaubey stated, “The honour of representing the country on the global stage is above all. The national interest should come first and that’s what I would try to explain to clubs and FSDL.”
He also underscored the need for cooperation among all stakeholders and suggested that postponing the ISL start date by ten days would benefit everyone involved. Chaubey firmly reiterated that India’s interests should take precedence over club commitments.
Regarding the reluctance of ISL clubs to release players due to the Asian Games falling outside the FIFA international match window, Chaubey emphasized that the nation’s interests must come first. He expressed his intention to personally engage with club owners and, if necessary, formally request the FSDL to consider postponing the league.
In response to Chaubey’s request, FSDL issued a statement clarifying that the decision to begin the ISL on September 21 was made in consultation with all stakeholders, including the AIFF. They emphasized that the final calendar was established based on AIFF’s recommendations regarding the league window.
The FSDL spokesperson highlighted that all stakeholders had formally agreed to the schedule, which includes provisions for FIFA windows and a break for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup. They maintained that the schedule had been meticulously designed, taking various factors into account, and indicated that there was no room for further changes. However, they expressed a willingness to continue working with the AIFF to find a satisfactory solution.
The situation remains unresolved as both parties strive to reach a consensus that balances the interests of Indian football clubs and the national team’s participation in the prestigious Asian Games.
