Mumbai City FC head coach Petr Kratky is gearing up for a highly competitive Indian Super League (ISL) season as his team looks to defend their ISL Cup title and reclaim the League Shield from Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG). Kratky’s side lost the League Shield to MBSG in the final league match last season but bounced back to secure the ISL Cup in a dramatic final.

Kratky, speaking during the ISL Media Day in Kochi, expressed his expectations for a more evenly matched competition this year. He emphasized that more teams are in contention for the Shield, making the upcoming season even more thrilling.

“I don’t think there will be only one, two, or three teams dominating the whole season,” Kratky said. “There are around eight teams in contention this season, which is fantastic for us. We are excited about what’s happening in Indian football and ISL this season. Even teams that struggled initially are improving with new investments, and I believe the league will be more competitive as we move forward.”

Key Changes at Mumbai City FC

The Islanders have made significant changes to their squad and coaching staff ahead of the new season. Former Indian international Clifford Miranda and David Preece have joined Kratky’s backroom staff, while players like Jon Toral, Brandon Fernandes, and Nikolaos Karelis are among the new arrivals. On the other hand, key players such as Apuia, Jorge Pereyra Diaz, and Rahul Bheke have left the club.

Kratky acknowledged the changes but maintained that they are part of the club’s ongoing evolution. “People come and go, but we try to always put them together and work in the same direction. I’m very happy with how things are progressing, and we’ll see how we perform in Round 1.”

Mumbai City FC vs. Mohun Bagan SG: A Rivalry Reignited

Mumbai City FC will kick off their campaign with a high-stakes clash against Mohun Bagan SG, the team they finished last season against in both the league and ISL Cup final. While there are no major trophies on the line immediately, Kratky knows that the three points at stake in this match could be crucial in determining which team comes out on top by the season’s end.

“We’ve started a new chapter, and we’re working very hard to achieve our goals. We don’t just want to be average; we want to stay at the top all the time,” Kratky added.

As the Islanders prepare for what promises to be a thrilling season, fans are eagerly awaiting the first showdown between last season’s two biggest rivals. Both teams will be keen to set the tone for the rest of the campaign and secure an early advantage in their quest for the ISL crown.
